the alistair roberts memorial fund application form

helping young people to help others

ARMF was set up in 2002 in memory of Alistair Roberts (1983-2001). It aims to provide financial support to young adults who wish to participate as Brancardiers or Handmaidens in an organized pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, or as Stagiaires under the jurisdiction of the Hospitalité Notre Dame de Lourdes, and who lack the means to do so.

Like Alistair, who attended the Ampleforth pilgrimage in 2000 and 2001, applicants must possess a keen desire to contribute to caring for pilgrims and a willingness to engage in the spiritual life of Lourdes. The fund is open to young adults of any religious denomination, or of no religious affiliation at all.

From the very early days of the Christian Church, the sick, the dying, the elderly and disabled people have been given special place in its prayer and ministry. They teach us that weakness and vulnerability are a part of human life and that suffering can be embraced with no loss of dignity.

On a visit to England in May 1982, Pope John Paul II urged all who enjoy good health to treasure and recognize with gratitude the debt we owe the sick. ‘We begin,’ he said, while presiding over the anointing of the sick in Southwark Cathedral, London, ‘by imagining that we are giving to them. We end by realizing that they have enriched us.’

Caring for the sick is, for many young people, the most powerful and memorable experience of their time in Lourdes. Alistair, who was killed in a car accident in December 2001, always spoke with enthusiasm about his experience there and what it taught him, and looked forward to his return. It is the wish of Alistair's family and the aim of the Alistair Roberts Memorial Fund that it help provide an opportunity for others who might otherwise not be able to go.

Useful notes regarding this application

If you own a non-EU passport and require a VISA to travel to Lourdes, please apply for your correct, additional travel documents ASAP.

Please check you have an up-to-date DBS (previously labelled as CRB) form.  This government Disclosure and Barring Service helps employers and voluntary organisations make safe recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people working with vulnerable groups, including children.

Please liaise with your Pilgrimage organiser/Group Leaders regarding your position with this safeguarding admin.

This is your responsibility to arrange, not ARMF's.

Travel Insurance: Travelling independently to Lourdes is not encouraged with this application. However, should this be unavoidable i.e. you are travelling to Lourdes from outside the UK, then you need to arrange your own travel insurance and provide evidence of this.

If opting for ‘partial funding’ you should state clearly to your pilgrimage group and ARMF whether you wish to arrange your own travel insurance and provide evidence of this.

Only in exceptional circumstances will full funding be given.

In addition, only in outstanding circumstances will an applicant be considered after the closing date for applications.

The Trustees would like to remind applicants that those applying for the second time will only be considered after decisions about first time applicants have been confirmed. ARMF only provides repeat bursaries to candidates in exceptional circumstances, and even then only if that year’s budget allows it once first time applications that year have been considered
